A Typical Day at TNS

  • 8:45 – 9:00 Arrival — children arrive at school and socialize until the bell rings.
  • 9:20 Bell Rings — students go to “Bookcorner” (name given to the morning class meeting). Bookcorner consists of announcements, sharing, plans for the day, schedules, discussions, etc.
  • After Bookcorner to 10:50 Work time — individual, small or large groups work on a wide variety of activities designated by the teacher or chosen by children. Their activities are connected to projects and all aspects of the curriculum are involved. For example, in Younger Class the teacher might ask them to work on their journals, some math, quiet reading, and choose in what order it is done. Middle Class have all ongoing activities on white board and if not assigned to a special activity can choose what work they want to do. Older Class has a daily or weekly schedule with everything listed to work on and check off as they do each activity.
  • 10:50 – 11:15 Snack Time — followed by outside play.
  • 11:15 – 12:20 Work Time — continued.
  • 12:00 Younger Class Breaks for Lunch – the teacher reads the class a book while they eat their lunch. After they are done eating, they go outside to play until 1:20.
  • 12:20 – 1:20 Middle and Older Classes Break for Lunch — followed by outside play.
  • 1:20 Bookcorner — usually a brief session for all three classes to discuss direction for the afternoon.
  • 1:30 – 3:00 Work Time — more time to continue individual, small group, or larger group project work.
  • 3:00 – 3:20 Clean Up / Wrap Up — time to finish projects and get ready for pick up at 3:20
  • 3:30 Bell Rings — the school day is over and it’s time for students and parents to leave the school grounds

Note: There are sessions of music and phys ed once a week but again these are connected to ongoing projects or activities already happening.
